[ THE HYPOTHESIS ]
Artifact-SETI asks whether a durable extraterrestrial probe or artifact could be
present in the Solar System, and whether public astronomical observations can
place useful constraints on that possibility. It is a search hypothesis, not an
explanation for unexplained data and not a claim that any artifact has been found.
The program looks for measurable departures from ordinary populations: unusual
orbits, reflectance, thermal behavior, variability, morphology, or cross-survey
counterparts. Every departure is tested first against natural dynamics, catalog
limitations, contamination, selection effects, and processing artifacts.

[ INTELLECTUAL LINEAGE ]
1960 · BRACEWELL Interstellar messenger probes
Bracewell established the possibility of autonomous probes waiting near a
target star, detecting a technological society locally, and communicating on
behalf of their makers. This turns part of SETI from a distant-signal problem
into a possible local-observation problem.
1978 · PAPAGIANNIS The asteroid belt as search space
Papagiannis argued that Solar-System small-body populations, especially the
asteroid belt, deserve direct attention as possible locations for long-lived
extraterrestrial technology. The proposal motivates systematic searches of
places where artifacts could persist among natural objects.
2019 · BENFORD Nearby co-orbitals as observables
Benford developed the “lurker” search concept for nearby co-orbital objects:
stable or recurrent vantage points that can be inspected with optical and
radar observations. The key move is operational—identify plausible sites and
make them observable.

[ CLAIM BOUNDARY ]
A statistical outlier is not an artifact. A suggestive location is not evidence
of occupancy. A null result is still useful when its sample, sensitivity, and
exclusions are recorded. Artifact-SETI publishes the search path, counter-tests,
and uncertainty so each inquiry can be audited independently of its outcome.
